Yes, they can die on you however they usually burrow into your skin, making a hole and crawling in. Best way to remove them is to heat a safety pin with a lighter and then reach in the hole and poke them in the rear with the hot pin, they will quickly pull out of the hole. Never try to pull them out as you will only remove the body and the head will remain inside increasing the risk of lyme disease or rocky mountain fever, depending on where you live. Of course after 3 or 4 days...okay skipping the lecture.
