Does anyone know the max system in Portland, OR?

I live about an hour away from Portland, OR, but work in Portland. Paying for all day parking is so expensive! I'm looking around at Park and Ride's to take the max to work instead and just park my car there for free. Is this safe? Or is the max hard to ride? I work on W Burnside.
