A question regarding observation of stars?

To observe the speed or distance of moving star we collect light from the star under observation. but how can some one guarantee that the light we are receiving is from the particular star. because light comes in random from many direction. further more if we are observing a star 100 light years from us then at such immense distance many start can occupy a small distance as viewed from earth. plz answer it thoroughly
