Do you have to live in Los Angeles to pursue a Hollywood career?

I'm from Portland, but I'm very close with my family in San Diego. They would be willing to take me in as long as I need, but can you still pursue a Hollywood career while living in San Diego? Or should I just rent a place in the L.A. area? I just think living in San Diego with my family would be vastly cheaper.
